All About Quartz Countertops

Easy-Care Kitchen Surface

Made from one of the hardest minerals on earth, quartz countertops are arguably the most durable option for kitchens. They're also some of the most eye-catching. They come in a wide variety of colors, including fire-engine red and apple green, as well as earthy browns, blacks, and creams, with sparkles and veining for the look of granite or marble. But unlike natural-stone slabs, which are mined, these slabs are engineered in a factory. Their primary ingredient is ground quartz (about 94 percent), combined with polyester resins to bind it and pigments to give it color. For some designs, small amounts of recycled glass or metallic flecks are added to the mix. The resins also help make these counters stain and scratch resistant—and nonporous, so they never need to be sealed. Compare that with granite, the reigning king of high-end countertops, which typically requires a new protective top coat at least once a year.

In the past, the biggest knock against quartz was that it lacked the patterns and color variations you get with natural stone. But that's a moot point now, with all the manufacturers offering multihued slabs with enough flecks, swirls, and random patterning to make them almost indistinguishable from the real thing. They were once available only with a polished finish; now you can get one with a honed, sandblasted, or embossed treatment. So if it's the look of matte limestone, textured slate, or glossy granite that you want, there's a quartz countertop for you. Read on for help picking one to match your budget, your cooking and cleaning needs, and your style.

Granite-like movement in black and gray gives this quartz countertop a bold, traditional look.

How to measure your Kitchen

  1. Make a rough drawing of the shape of the room. Represent each wall, door, window and any protrusions or recessed areas.
  2. Measure each wall section and record on the drawing. (A wall section is from one corner to a door way or window.)
  3. Measure each door and record; don’t forget Indicate on your sketch how each door swings. (In to or out of the room & which side the hinge is on).
NOTE: windows and doors are measured from outside edge to outside edge of casing or trim.
  4. Measure from the floor to the bottom of your windows & mark it down
  5. Measure each window; don’t forget windows are measured from outside edge to outside edge of casing or trim.
  6. Then measure from the bottom of the window to the top of the window.
  7. Measure from the top of the window to the ceiling & mark it down.
  8. Measure from the floor to the ceiling. Total the measurement from 4+6+7 they should equal this measurement.
  9. Mark the locations of where the appliances will go, be sure to record the dimensions of each appliance. Start by measuring the Width, Height, and Depth. If you are putting in new appliances, try to have the Width, Height, and Depth, of any new stoves, dishwashers, and refrigerators ready at the time of design. Be sure to include new services such as a water line for an icemaker, or under cabinet outlets for water filters, wine keepers, or garbage disposal
  10. Mark on your sketch, the exact location of the sink, water & gas lines, wall switch & receptacles, & any other obstructions in the room. Be sure to measure to the center of these & not the edge. Double check your work. These measurements must be correct for your new cabinetry to fit correctly.
  11. Measure all other walls in kitchen following steps 3 through 9. Measure all walls even if you do not plan to put cabinets on them. (This is important for us to present you with a proper design).
  12. Add up all dimensions on each wall and verify that the total is equal to the total wall dimension listed on the chart. (If not, re-measure!)
